Mel Carlin is passionate about ensuring that young people receive the highest quality of educational, no matter what their postcode. Mel graduated from the University of Sheffield to take up her first teaching post as a History teacher in 2006 at St. Mary's, Menston; one of the highest performing comprehensive schools in the country. She qualified as a History Advanced Skills Teacher in 2012 and through this post, she was responsible for the delivery of city-wide training for subject leaders, contributing to raising standards in History teaching throughout the authority.
In 2013, she was appointed as Subject Leader for History and Head of Humanities and under this leadership, the Humanities faculty and school was recognised as Ofsted Outstanding. Her passion for pedagogy and practice led her to take up the post of Lead Practitioner as part of Abbey MAT in 2016. Mel was then appointed as Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning at Bishop Young Academy and was promoted to MAT Vice Principal for Quality of Education in 2021, contributing to both Bishop Young's and Lightcliffe's rapid improvement journey. She is currently Strategic School Improvement Lead (Secondary). Mel is also a passionate advocate of the importance of oracy to ensure a talk-rich education for all. Impact of her work in this field has been recognised at national level and cited in the recent Parliamentary Report, 'Speak for Change' (2021), as well as in educational research led by Oxford University.
